Heavy Rains Batter Kerala: Yellow Alert in 8 Districts, Schools Shut in Thiruvananthapuram

Thiruvananthapuram, September 26 — Heavy rains lashed central and southern Kerala on Thursday, disrupting normal life and prompting authorities to announce precautionary measures, including the closure of schools in Thiruvananthapuram. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed eight districts under a yellow alert, warning of more intense downpours over the coming hours.

Schools Closed Amid Safety Concerns

In view of the continuous rainfall, the district administration in Thiruvananthapuram declared a holiday for all educational institutions on Friday, September 26. Authorities stated that the decision was taken to ensure student safety, as several parts of the city and surrounding regions reported waterlogging and difficult commuting conditions.

IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Eight Districts

According to the IMD, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, and Thrissur remain under yellow alert. The weather office has cautioned residents of these districts to remain vigilant, as heavy rainfall is expected to persist throughout the day.

Officials highlighted that the rain activity is linked to a low-pressure system that had earlier developed over north Odisha and the adjoining Bay of Bengal. Though the system has weakened, it has left behind a cyclonic circulation, resulting in widespread showers across Kerala. Neighboring Lakshadweep has also reported bouts of rainfall due to the same weather conditions.

Rainfall Data Across Kerala

The state witnessed significant rainfall on Thursday. Lower Sholayar in Thrissur recorded the highest rainfall at 80 mm, followed by Pathanamthitta with 68 mm and Karumadi in Alappuzha with 55 mm. In comparison, Thiruvananthapuram city recorded 29 mm of rainfall, though continuous showers contributed to local flooding in several areas.

Residents Urged to Stay Cautious

Authorities have issued an advisory urging people living in low-lying areas, hilly regions, and riverbanks to remain alert, as water levels could rise quickly. Fishermen have also been warned against venturing into the sea due to rough conditions expected along the Kerala coast. Disaster management teams are on standby, and district administrations are closely monitoring the situation.

Looking Ahead

With the southwest monsoon still active and cyclonic circulations influencing local weather, Kerala may continue to experience heavy showers in the coming days. The IMD has not ruled out the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall events, particularly in the southern districts.

For now, residents are advised to follow official updates, limit unnecessary travel, and take necessary precautions to stay safe.
