Delhi’s South Asian University Student Alleges Attempted Gang-Rape on Campus; Police Launch Probe

A first-year B.Tech student at Delhi’s South Asian University (SAU) has alleged that she was sexually assaulted and faced an attempted gang rape by four men inside the university campus. The alleged incident occurred in a secluded area currently undergoing construction, according to the student’s complaint filed with the Maidan Garhi Police Station.

The student claimed that the accused men tore her clothes, touched her inappropriately, and tried to force themselves on her before she managed to escape. “The four accused tore my clothes, touched me, and attempted to gang-rape me,” she stated in her complaint.

Police Investigation Underway

Police officials confirmed that a PCR call about the incident was received around 3 p.m. on Monday, prompting an immediate response from officers at Maidan Garhi station. Initially, a case of molestation was registered; however, after the survivor’s detailed statement was recorded, sections related to attempted gang rape were added to the FIR.

Investigators said that the university is equipped with CCTV cameras across most areas of the campus, and footage from the construction site and surrounding locations is being reviewed for evidence. Police teams are also verifying whether the accused individuals are associated with the university or outsiders who gained access to the restricted area.

Campus Unrest and Administrative Response

Following news of the alleged assault, a wave of anger and concern spread across the campus. Students at SAU staged a protest demanding justice and stronger safety measures, urging the administration to take accountability for lapses in security.

The university administration has yet to release an official statement but confirmed that it is fully cooperating with the police investigation. Officials also stated that additional security measures are being reviewed to prevent such incidents in the future.

The South Asian University, established under the SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) framework, hosts students from all eight member nations. The institution operates under the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), giving the case international visibility due to its cross-border academic community.

Context: Rising Concerns Over Women’s Safety in Delhi

This latest incident has once again raised questions about campus safety and women’s security in the national capital. It follows closely on the heels of another shocking case, where an 18-year-old MBBS student was allegedly raped by a man in a hotel in Delhi’s Adarsh Nagar area last week.

With two major assault cases surfacing within days, authorities are under pressure to intensify surveillance, improve campus security, and ensure that women feel safe in academic environments.
