Kolkata Minor Raped, Becomes Pregnant; Accused Arrested Under POCSO Act
Kolkata, West Bengal:
A shocking case has emerged from Kolkata where a minor girl was allegedly raped multiple times by a man, leading to her pregnancy. The Kolkata Police have arrested the accused and initiated a probe under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
According to officials, the incident came to light after the victim’s family filed a complaint at the South Port Police Station. Following the FIR, the accused was arrested late on Sunday, a senior police officer confirmed.
“The minor was allegedly raped on several occasions by the arrested accused, resulting in her pregnancy. Her parents approached the police after discovering her condition,”
the officer told PTI.
Relationship Under Scrutiny
Preliminary investigation has revealed that the accused and the minor were known to each other and had reportedly been in a relationship for some time. However, police clarified that since the girl is under 18, any sexual act constitutes a criminal offence, regardless of consent.
Investigators are currently verifying digital and phone records to trace communication between the two and to determine the sequence of events leading up to the assault. The victim has undergone a medical examination, and her statement will soon be recorded before a magistrate.
Charges and Investigation
The accused has been booked under various sections of the POCSO Act and relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Police said the man is being interrogated to uncover how the incidents took place and whether anyone else was involved.
“The accused is being questioned to ascertain the exact circumstances and timeline of the offence,”
the officer added.
Authorities are also ensuring that the minor receives medical care and psychological counselling through the local child welfare services.
Growing Concern Over Crimes Against Minors
This case adds to the growing number of child sexual abuse cases being reported across West Bengal. Child rights activists have urged stronger awareness programs and faster investigations in such sensitive matters.
Police officials have appealed to parents to remain vigilant and to immediately report any suspicious activity involving minors, particularly when it involves online or personal interactions.
