Fire Breaks Out at Sindhu Apartments Housing MPs in Central Delhi; No Casualties Reported

A fire broke out at Sindhu Apartments, a residential complex housing several Members of Parliament (MPs), in central Delhi on Wednesday evening. The incident triggered panic among residents before firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control. No casualties or injuries were reported, officials said.

According to the Delhi Fire Services (DFS), the control room received a call about the fire at around 8:44 pm. The fire reportedly originated from the electricity board located on the ground floor of the complex, sending smoke billowing through the corridors and prompting residents to rush outdoors for safety.

“Upon receiving the alert, eight fire tenders were immediately dispatched to the scene,” said a senior DFS official. “Our teams reached within minutes and began firefighting operations. The blaze was successfully doused by 9:15 pm, preventing it from spreading to the upper floors or nearby structures.”

Sindhu Apartments, located on Baba Kharak Singh Marg, is a high-security residential block that houses several sitting and former MPs. The area, just a few minutes from Connaught Place, is among Delhi’s most prominent and tightly guarded government residential zones.

Eyewitnesses described a brief period of commotion when alarms were raised and residents were asked to evacuate. Firefighters and police cordoned off the area as a precaution, while emergency personnel checked each flat to ensure everyone’s safety.

Officials confirmed that the cause of the fire appears to be an electrical short circuit, though a detailed investigation is underway to determine the exact trigger. The power supply to the building was temporarily cut off during firefighting operations and later restored after inspection.

“We are thankful that the situation was brought under control quickly. There were no injuries or major damage except some electrical fittings,” an official from the Fire Services added.

Authorities said a technical inspection team from the electricity board will review the wiring and power systems at the complex to prevent future incidents. Additional fire safety checks have also been ordered for nearby MP residential quarters as a precautionary measure.

The incident serves as a reminder of the need for strict adherence to fire safety standards in high-occupancy government housing complexes, many of which are decades old and prone to electrical faults.
