South Will Suffer: Vijay Opposes Bill

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and TVK chief Vijay on Wednesday moved a resolution in the state Assembly opposing the proposed delimitation of Lok Sabha constituencies. He backed women’s reservation but argued that it should be implemented within the existing 543 Lok Sabha seats rather than through an increase linked to population-based delimitation.

Vijay warned that southern states such as Tamil Nadu could face a reduction in their political representation if parliamentary seats are redistributed according to population. He argued that states that successfully implemented population-control measures should not be penalised for their demographic achievements.

“If the bill is passed, the representation for southern states, which successfully implemented population control, will suffer. There is a necessity to freeze the numbers,” Vijay said.

South Will Suffer: Vijay Moves Delimitation Resolution

Three Key Demands in Resolution

The resolution put forward by the Vijay-led Tamil Nadu government included three major demands. It called for the existing 543 Lok Sabha seats to be permanently maintained, the seats currently allocated to individual states to be protected, and 33% reservation for women to be ensured in state legislative assemblies.

Vijay made it clear that his opposition was not against women’s reservation itself. Instead, he called for women’s representation to be introduced without altering the existing distribution of parliamentary seats among states.

The move comes amid renewed discussions at the Centre over a constitutional amendment related to delimitation and women’s reservation. There has been speculation that the government could introduce a constitutional amendment bill during the final days of the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament.

Southern States Raise Representation Concerns

The delimitation debate has become particularly sensitive in southern India because states such as Tamil Nadu have achieved relatively lower population growth through sustained family-planning and population-control measures.

Supporters of the southern states’ position argue that using current population figures as the primary basis for reallocating Lok Sabha seats could give states with larger populations greater representation. They fear this could weaken the political influence of states that have successfully controlled population growth.

The Tamil Nadu government’s resolution therefore seeks to preserve the existing balance while supporting greater representation for women.

Delimitation Debate Gains Momentum

The Centre’s renewed push for delimitation has brought the issue back into national political debate. The proposal has also been linked to the implementation of women’s reservation in Parliament and state assemblies.

For Tamil Nadu, however, the question goes beyond women’s representation. The state government views the issue as one involving federal balance and the political representation of southern states.

Vijay’s resolution signals that Tamil Nadu intends to strongly oppose any delimitation exercise that it believes could reduce the state’s influence in Parliament. At the same time, his support for 33% women’s reservation indicates that the state’s position is focused on how the reform is implemented rather than opposition to reservation itself.

The issue is likely to remain a major political flashpoint as the Centre considers its next steps on delimitation and women’s reservation.
