The two-day summit, hosted by India, will bring together leaders from across the world for discussions on international cooperation, economic resilience and pressing geopolitical issues.

In a post on X, Modi said he was confident that the conference would witness constructive discussions on various issues with the shared goal of global welfare.

The summit is expected to focus on strengthening collective resilience in areas such as food security, energy, healthcare, disaster management and critical supply chains. India is positioning BRICS as an important platform for cooperation at a time when the global geopolitical environment remains deeply fragmented.

Global Crises Set The Backdrop

The New Delhi summit comes amid several major international challenges affecting the global economy.

The continuing Russia-Ukraine war, the crisis in West Asia and disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz have created uncertainty in energy markets and global trade. The trade and tariff policies of the Donald Trump administration have also added pressure to the international economic system.

Against this backdrop, India is expected to push for greater cooperation among BRICS members and partner countries. The summit could provide an opportunity for participating nations to discuss ways to improve supply-chain stability and reduce vulnerabilities caused by geopolitical tensions.

Leaders from several countries are expected to attend the summit, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Russian President Vladimir Putin and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Other prominent participants include Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali and Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung.

Putin Begins Three-Day India Visit

Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in India on Friday for a three-day visit that includes participation in the BRICS Summit and bilateral talks with Prime Minister Modi.

Putin is accompanied by a high-level delegation. His visit is expected to focus on expanding cooperation between India and Russia in trade, investment and energy.

Modi and Putin are scheduled to hold wide-ranging discussions on Friday afternoon. The talks are likely to cover defence, energy, technology, pharmaceuticals and people-to-people exchanges.

Putin’s visit is also significant because it marks his first in-person participation at a BRICS summit outside Russia since the Russia-Ukraine war began in February 2022.

Delhi On High Alert Ahead Of Summit

New Delhi has been placed on high alert ahead of the two-day summit, which will be held at Bharat Mandapam.

Around 15,000 Delhi Police personnel, 200 companies of paramilitary forces and more than 500 CCTV cameras are expected to be deployed to ensure the security of visiting leaders.

Delhi Traffic Police has announced temporary restrictions, diversions and stoppages along routes used by VVIP convoys. Authorities have clarified that the city will not be shut down, but commuters should expect delays and changes in traffic movement.

The security arrangements are aimed at ensuring the smooth movement of foreign dignitaries and preventing disruptions during the summit.

Congress Leader Calls Summit Significant

Former Union Minister Salman Khurshid described the BRICS gathering as a significant opportunity for India to demonstrate leadership on the global stage.

Speaking to ANI, Khurshid said the participation of leaders from all 11 member countries could help India bring nations together, reduce contradictions and address conflicts.

He said the summit could create better conditions for cooperation and contribute to efforts aimed at improving the global situation.

With major world leaders arriving in New Delhi, the BRICS Summit is expected to serve as an important platform for discussions on global economic stability, geopolitical tensions and collective welfare.
