Google to Invest $10 Billion in Visakhapatnam Data Hub, Its Largest Bet on India’s Digital Future

In a landmark move that underscores its confidence in India’s digital growth, Google is preparing to invest $10 billion (around ₹8,730 crore) to establish a massive data centre cluster in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The project, reported by The Economic Times, could become Google’s largest direct investment in India’s digital infrastructure to date.

According to the report, the upcoming 1-gigawatt data centre hub will span three campuses located across Adavivaram and Tarluvada villages in Visakhapatnam district, and Rambilli village in Anakapalli district.

The ambitious project will feature three high-capacity submarine cables, dedicated cable landing stations, metro fibre networks, and advanced telecommunications infrastructure — forming the backbone of what is expected to become Asia’s largest data centre region once completed.

Sources suggest that the formal agreement will likely be finalised during a meeting in New Delhi on October 14 between Google’s leadership and Andhra Pradesh’s IT and Electronics Minister Nara Lokesh. The proposal is also scheduled for review and approval by the state’s Investment Promotion Board, chaired by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, on Wednesday.

This marks Google’s first major data infrastructure venture in India, aligning with its global network of data centres spread across 11 countries, including the United States, Japan, Singapore, Ireland, and Germany.

Chief Minister Naidu, who signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Google in December 2024 shortly after returning to office, has since positioned Andhra Pradesh as a key destination for data and cloud infrastructure investments. Earlier this year, the state proposed amendments to the IT Act and Copyright Act to support the development of futuristic “data cities.”

A Google Asia-Pacific delegation visited Visakhapatnam in May to inspect potential sites for the data cluster, accompanied by Minister Lokesh.

Once operational, the Visakhapatnam data centre hub will serve as a core component of India’s first International AI Infrastructure Hub — an integrated digital ecosystem designed to fuel advanced research, innovation, and economic growth across the nation.
