15 fascinating facts about India’s presidents

On July 25, Droupadi Murmu will become India’s 15th president. Murmu’s triumph represents a number of firsts. She will be India’s first president who was born there. In addition to being the first tribal leader to assume the position of the nation’s top official, Murmu, 64, would also be the youngest person ever to occupy Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Here are some rememberable details about the previous Indian presidents:

Rajendra Prasad

The country of India's first president was Rajendra Prasad. Additionally, he is the only president to have held office for two terms in a row.

Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan

As the second President, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan presided. Before being elected to the top position, he was the first to hold the vice presidential position.

Zakir Hussain

The third and first Muslim president of India was Zakir Hussain. He was also the first president to pass away while in office. He was India's president for the least amount of time (less than two years).

Varahagiri Venkata Giri

The fourth President, Varahagiri Venkata Giri , became the first to hold both the office of President and acting President upon being elected.

Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed

The second Muslim and fifth President of the United States was Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed. During his presidency, the emergency was declared. He is the second President to die while in office. 

Neelam Sanjiva Reddy

The sixth leader was Neelam Sanjiva Reddy. At 64 years old, he became the youngest person to hold the position. He is the only one who was elected without opposition.

Giani Zail Singh

The seventh and first Sikh president of India was Giani Zail Singh.

Ramaswamy Venkataraman

The first president to work with four prime ministers—VP Singh, Chandra Shekhar, and PV Narasimha Rao—was the eighth president, Ramaswamy Venkataraman.

Shankar Dayal Sharma

The ninth President was Shankar Dayal Sharma. In his final year, he appointed three of the four PMs he had worked with: Atal Bihari Vajpayee, HD Deve Gowda, and IK Gujral.

 Kocheril Raman

 Kocheril Raman Narayanan served as India's 10th president and the country's first Dalit leader. He was the oldest president ever elected at 76 years and 271 days.

APJ Abdul Kalam

The first Muslim president to hold office for a full term was APJ Abdul Kalam, who was the eleventh president.

Pratibha Patil

Pratibha Patil was India's first female president after being chosen as the nation's 12th leader.

Pranab Mukherjee

The 13th President and the first Bengali to hold the position was Pranab Mukherjee.

Ram Nath Kovind

Ram Nath Kovind, the 14th President, was the first BJP candidate to win the position.

Before being elected, 11 presidents had political party memberships. Eight were from the Congress, two from the BJP, one from the Janata Party, and the rest were Independents.
