India Glasgow Medal Tally Tells Only Half the Story

India Glasgow campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games has been widely celebrated, with the Indian contingent returning home with 39 medals despite competing in one of the smallest editions of the Games in history. India’s fourth-place finish underlined the country’s growing strength across multiple sports, but it also raised an unavoidable question — how much bigger could the medal tally have been if the full Commonwealth Games programme had been retained?

With several of India’s traditional medal-winning disciplines missing from the Glasgow schedule, the final standings reflected only part of the country’s true Commonwealth Games potential. While India still secured 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze medals to finish behind Australia, England and Canada, many believe the final tally could have been significantly higher under a complete Commonwealth Games programme.

India Glasgow Medal Tally Impresses Despite Limited Programme

The 2026 Commonwealth Games featured only 10 sports, making it one of the leanest editions in the event’s history. The reduced programme meant several disciplines that have consistently delivered medals for India were excluded altogether.

Despite these limitations, India maintained its place among the leading sporting nations, finishing fourth in the overall medal standings. Hosts Scotland also collected 39 medals but finished below India because the Indian contingent won more silver medals.

The result reflected India’s ability to compete successfully even when several of its strongest sports were absent from the competition.

Missing Sports Reduced India’s Medal Chances

The biggest reason India’s medal count remained at 39 was the absence of four major sports — shooting, wrestling, badminton and table tennis.

Historically, these events have contributed a substantial share of India’s Commonwealth Games success.

Shooting alone produced an extraordinary 27 medals during the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in 2018. Wrestling added another 12 medals at Birmingham 2022, while badminton contributed six medals and table tennis added seven.

Combined, these four sports accounted for 52 medals in their most recent appearances at the Commonwealth Games.

While it would be unrealistic to assume India would have repeated those exact numbers in Glasgow, their exclusion undeniably reduced the country’s medal opportunities and altered the overall standings.

Athlete form, competition levels and qualification standards differ across editions, but historical performances clearly indicate that India lost one of its biggest competitive advantages.

Boxing and Athletics Step Up

Even without its traditional medal factories, India showcased remarkable depth across other disciplines.

Boxing emerged as India’s most successful sport, contributing 10 medals, including seven gold medals. However, observers also pointed out that the competition in boxing was relatively weaker compared to previous editions, allowing Indian boxers to dominate several categories.

Athletics also delivered one of India’s strongest Commonwealth Games performances, producing medals across track and field events and demonstrating the country’s continued improvement in the discipline.

Weightlifting, judo and para sports also made significant contributions, ensuring India remained firmly among the top-performing nations despite the reduced sporting calendar.

The Glasgow campaign highlighted that India is no longer dependent on only a handful of sports for international success.

India’s True Commonwealth Games Potential

Although the Glasgow medal tally appears impressive, it likely represents only a portion of India’s actual Commonwealth Games strength.

Had shooting, wrestling, badminton and table tennis been included and produced performances comparable to previous editions, India could realistically have crossed the 70-medal mark.

Such a total would have placed the country in serious contention with Canada for third place in the overall medal standings and perhaps narrowed the gap with the leading nations.

Instead, Glasgow became a reminder that the structure of a sporting event can significantly influence the final medal table.

Nevertheless, India’s consistent performances across boxing, athletics, weightlifting, judo and para sports indicate that its sporting ecosystem is expanding beyond traditional strengths.

Eyes Now on Ahmedabad 2030

The next major opportunity for India to showcase its complete Commonwealth Games potential is expected to come at the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad.

With a more traditional sporting programme likely to return, including several disciplines absent in Glasgow, India could compete across all its strongest events once again.

If sports such as shooting, wrestling, badminton and table tennis return to the Games and Indian athletes maintain their recent standards, the Glasgow medal tally may ultimately be remembered as only half the story.

The India Glasgow medal tally demonstrated resilience, versatility and growing sporting depth. Yet, it also highlighted how much larger India’s success could have been under a full Commonwealth Games programme, leaving fans optimistic that an even stronger performance could be on the horizon when the Games arrive on home soil in 2030.
