Yogi Dares Akhilesh, SP Chief Fires Back Over BJP Ticket

Yogi Challenges Akhilesh to Face Him in Ayodhya

Ayodhya has returned to the centre of Uttar Pradesh’s political battle ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath challenging Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav to contest against him from the temple town. Akhilesh responded by questioning whether the Chief Minister had secured confirmation of his own Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket.

The political exchange comes two years after the BJP lost the Faizabad Lok Sabha seat, which includes Ayodhya, to the Samajwadi Party in the 2024 general elections. The defeat was a setback for the BJP, particularly after the inauguration of the Ram Temple in January 2024, which had been a major focus of the party’s political messaging.

On Sunday, Akhilesh responded to Adityanath’s challenge by suggesting that the Chief Minister should first establish whether he would be the BJP’s candidate.

“Those whose own tickets are not confirmed are talking about tickets. The Chief Minister should first get his own ticket confirmed,” Akhilesh told reporters in Lucknow after paying tribute to socialist leader Jayaprakash Narayan on his birth anniversary.

“Our wind will sweep away arrogant people,” the SP chief added, invoking Narayan’s legacy of democratic resistance and social change.

How the Ayodhya Political Challenge Began

The confrontation began on October 8, when Akhilesh questioned the BJP’s position in Ayodhya and claimed the ruling party was surveying potential candidates after the Samajwadi Party announced Pawan Pandey as its nominee. He suggested that the BJP was struggling to identify a suitable candidate for the constituency.

Adityanath responded on October 10 during a public meeting in Balrampur, inviting Akhilesh to contest directly against him from Ayodhya.

“Akhilesh Ji, I offer you a challenge. You file your nomination from Shri Ayodhya Dham, and I will also file mine. Let us test our luck once,” the Chief Minister said.

Adityanath argued that his visits to Ayodhya were driven by development priorities and religious faith rather than electoral calculations. He also accused the Samajwadi Party of neglecting the city during its time in power.

The Chief Minister invoked the idea of Ram Rajya, presenting Ayodhya’s transformation as evidence of broader changes under the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh.

Why Ayodhya Matters for the BJP and SP

Ayodhya is politically significant because it houses the Ram Temple and remains closely associated with the BJP’s Hindutva politics. However, the 2024 Lok Sabha result demonstrated that the temple’s inauguration did not automatically translate into electoral success for the party.

Samajwadi Party candidate Awadhesh Prasad defeated BJP incumbent Lallu Singh in the Faizabad constituency by more than 54,000 votes. The result gave the Opposition an opportunity to challenge the BJP’s claims about development and religious outreach in the region.

Local concerns, including employment, economic conditions, development and land acquisition, have featured in discussions about the BJP’s defeat.

For the BJP, Adityanath’s challenge may serve as an attempt to reclaim the political narrative surrounding Ayodhya before voters return to the polls in 2027. For the SP, the constituency remains an opportunity to challenge the ruling party on governance and electoral performance.

Yogi and Akhilesh Intensify Political Attacks

During his Balrampur address, Adityanath also criticised the Samajwadi Party over alleged criminal patronage, corruption and its candidate choices for Rajya Sabha elections. He mocked the party’s PDA slogan, which stands for Pichhda, Dalit and Alpsankhyak—backward classes, Dalits and minorities—by calling it “Parivar Development Authority”.

He alleged that the SP favoured family members and wealthy supporters over the communities it claims to represent.

Adityanath currently represents Gorakhpur Urban in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, while Akhilesh represents Kannauj in the Lok Sabha. Akhilesh previously represented Karhal in the state Assembly before resigning after winning the Kannauj parliamentary seat in 2024.

Neither leader’s remarks amount to a confirmed change in constituency for the 2027 polls. However, their exchange has placed Ayodhya firmly back in Uttar Pradesh’s political conversation, setting the stage for a contest over the BJP’s development claims, the SP’s opposition strategy and the electoral significance of the Ram Temple.
