Baruipur Minor Rape-Murder

The investigation into the Baruipur minor rape-murder case took a dramatic turn after the prime accused, Prabash Mondal, was killed in a police encounter during a crime scene reconstruction in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district. The incident has added another layer of controversy to a case that has already sparked widespread public outrage, violent protests and political attention across the state.

The 12-year-old victim’s body was recovered from a pond in Baruipur earlier this week after being allegedly raped and murdered. According to police, her body had been stuffed inside a sack before being dumped in the water, triggering anger among residents and demands for swift justice.

Baruipur Minor Rape-Murder Probe Takes Dramatic Turn

Police said Prabash Mondal was one of three accused arrested in connection with the brutal crime. In the early hours of Tuesday, officers from Baruipur Police Station took him to Surjyapur to reconstruct the sequence of events linked to the murder investigation.

According to officials, shortly before the reconstruction began, Mondal allegedly snatched the service weapon of a police officer and opened fire at the police team. Investigators said he then attempted to escape from the spot.

Police personnel retaliated by firing at the accused, injuring him during the exchange. Mondal was immediately shifted to Baruipur Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Authorities stated that the encounter occurred during official investigative proceedings and further inquiries into the incident are expected as part of standard police procedure.

Victim’s Death Triggered Massive Public Outrage

The Baruipur minor rape-murder case had already generated widespread anger after the girl’s body was recovered on July 5.

Residents accused authorities of acting slowly after the child went missing and organised large-scale protests demanding immediate arrests and strict punishment for those responsible.

Demonstrators blocked the Baruipur-Joynagar Road, set tyres on fire and vandalised police vehicles as tensions escalated across the area.

The protests soon turned violent, creating a law-and-order challenge for local authorities.

Mob Lynching Adds Another Twist

The situation became even more complicated when an angry crowd lynched a man identified as Indrajit Mondal, suspecting him of involvement in the crime.

Police later clarified that Indrajit Mondal had no connection with the rape and murder investigation and was an innocent victim of mob violence.

Following the incident, police arrested three individuals accused of participating in the lynching. Authorities confirmed that those involved would face murder charges as the investigation continues.

The dual tragedies have intensified demands for justice while highlighting the dangers of mob vigilantism during emotionally charged criminal investigations.

SIT Expands Investigation Into The Case

To ensure a comprehensive investigation, police constituted a six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to examine every aspect of the case.

Investigators are collecting forensic evidence, witness statements and technical data to establish the complete sequence of events surrounding the crime.

The SIT is also reviewing the police response following the victim’s disappearance and examining whether all procedures were followed promptly.

Officials have indicated that the investigation will continue despite the death of the main accused, with efforts focused on identifying the role of every individual allegedly connected to the crime.

Chief Minister Seeks Report Within 72 Hours

Amid mounting political pressure and public anger, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari met the victim’s family and reviewed the progress of the investigation.

The Chief Minister directed Director General of Police Sidd Nath Gupta to submit a detailed report within 72 hours and warned that strict action would be taken if any negligence was found during the investigation.

He stated that even minimal lapses in responding to the initial complaint would invite disciplinary action.

The Chief Minister also confirmed that police had identified nearly 200 people allegedly involved in vandalism, attacks on police personnel and destruction of public property during the protests.

He assured that legal action would be taken against all those responsible for the violence.

Support For Both Families

During his visit, the Chief Minister assured both the victim’s family and the family of Indrajit Mondal that justice would be delivered.

He announced plans to establish a police outpost in Surjyapur following requests from local residents and said compensation and additional assistance for the affected families would be announced after further consultations.

Authorities also visited police personnel injured during the unrest and assured them of full support from the state administration.

Investigation Continues

The Baruipur minor rape-murder case remains one of the most closely watched criminal investigations in West Bengal. While the death of the main accused has altered the course of the probe, investigators continue to examine every aspect of the crime, the subsequent mob violence and the police response.

With the SIT actively pursuing the investigation and the state government seeking accountability at multiple levels, officials say the focus remains on ensuring justice for the young victim while taking legal action against everyone found responsible for both the murder and the violence that followed.
