Delhi Building Collapse Raises Hostel Safety Concerns

Delhi Building Collapse Puts Nearby Hostels Under Scanner

The Delhi building collapse near Satya Niketan has triggered fresh questions over safety standards at nearby paying guest facilities and hostels. The collapse on Sunday killed six people and prompted authorities to examine other buildings in the area for possible safety violations.

Two hostels operated by Hostel Daze have now come under scrutiny because of their proximity to the collapsed structure. One property is located around 70 to 80 metres from the collapse site, while another is approximately 100 metres away.

A ground inspection of the first hostel highlighted several apparent safety concerns. The property appears to have a single narrow passage that serves as both the entry and exit route. The passage is reportedly only around two feet wide, raising concerns over whether residents could evacuate quickly during an emergency.

The exit is also fitted with an iron gate. In a densely occupied hostel, such an arrangement could make evacuation more difficult if a fire, structural failure or another emergency required residents to leave the building immediately.

Narrow Access And Electrical Wires Raise Concerns

Safety concerns were also observed around the electrical infrastructure of the hostel.

Several electrical wires were seen hanging near the property, with the ground report describing their arrangement as improper. The presence of such wiring close to areas used for entry and exit has raised additional questions about electrical safety.

The second Hostel Daze property, located roughly 100 metres from the collapse site, is also a multi-storey building. It has five floors, according to the ground report.

Electrical arrangements around this property have similarly come under the scanner. Electricity meters are installed outside the building, while wires near the entrance and exit areas were reportedly hanging without proper arrangement.

The concerns are significant because both properties accommodate students and are situated close to the site of the fatal Delhi building collapse.

Buildings Exceeding Permitted Height

The inspection has also highlighted a broader concern about building heights in the locality.

According to the ground report, buildings exceeding three floors are not permitted in the area. However, several structures being used as hostels are reportedly four or five storeys high.

The two properties examined are examples of the multi-storey buildings operating in the locality. One of them has been identified as a five-storey structure.

The issue of building height is particularly important because unauthorised additional floors can raise questions about structural safety, occupancy levels and compliance with local construction regulations.

Students living in such buildings may also face greater risks if emergency exits, stairways and access routes are not designed to handle large numbers of occupants.

MCD Orders Action Against Illegal Buildings

Following the fatal collapse, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) ordered the immediate sealing of illegal constructions exceeding four floors.

The move has brought renewed attention to the growing number of PG accommodations and hostels operating in areas popular with students.

The latest inspection findings raise questions about whether similar properties are complying with construction permissions and safety requirements. Authorities may now face pressure to inspect hostels and PG facilities more closely, particularly those operating from multi-storey buildings.

For residents, the availability of clear and accessible emergency exits is one of the most important safety requirements. Narrow passages, locked gates and poorly arranged electrical wires could complicate evacuation during a crisis.

The Delhi building collapse has therefore become more than an isolated structural incident. It has also drawn attention to safety conditions in surrounding buildings where students and other residents live.

As the MCD begins action against suspected illegal constructions, further inspections could determine whether other hostel and PG operators in the area are complying with building regulations and safety norms.
