9 Metres in 30 Minutes: Avalanche May Have Fueled Nepal Flood Fury

Nepal Flood: What Happened?

A suspected ice-rock avalanche high in the Himalayas may have triggered a devastating Nepal flood in Rasuwa district on August 26, sending a sudden wall of water, debris and huge boulders downstream through the Bhote Kosi and Trishuli river systems.

The disaster struck near Nepal’s northern border with Tibet, causing extensive destruction. Homes, vehicles, bridges and infrastructure sites were reportedly swept away by the powerful flash flood.

The scale of the flooding has raised questions about what caused such a rapid and destructive surge. Preliminary scientific assessments are now focusing on an avalanche that may have occurred in the Lende Khola, a tributary of the Bhote Kosi River.

One of the strongest clues comes from hydrological measurements recorded during the disaster. Water levels on the Trishuli River at Galchchi reportedly rose by as much as nine metres in only 30 minutes. At Malekhu, the river level increased by around seven metres over a similar period.

Scientists say such a dramatic rise suggests that a huge volume of water was released suddenly, rather than the flooding being caused solely by normal monsoon rainfall.

Researchers from the Kathmandu-based International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), along with partner institutions in Nepal and China, are studying satellite imagery, video footage, seismic signals and river data to determine the precise sequence of events.

Preliminary evidence suggests that a large mass of ice and rock could have crashed into the Lende Khola. The impact may have displaced water and sent a debris-filled surge into the river system.

Could Another Flood Hit Nepal?

Scientists are also examining a potentially more dangerous possibility: the avalanche debris may have temporarily blocked the river.

Such a blockage can form a natural barrier known as a landslide dam. Water may accumulate behind it before eventually breaking through the obstruction. If that happens suddenly, another powerful surge could travel downstream.

Authorities have reportedly remained concerned about a possible blockage near the Nepal-China border. Evacuation measures have been considered in areas around Jilong port while experts assess the stability of the suspected obstruction.

Researchers are therefore not only investigating what caused the initial Nepal flood, but also monitoring whether another surge could occur.

Did an Earthquake Trigger the Flood?

Seismic data could provide another important piece of the puzzle.

A seismometer in Jilong, located around 12 kilometres from the affected area, detected unusual signals during the disaster. Another monitoring station in Zhangmu also recorded anomalous activity.

Scientists are studying whether these signals were generated by the suspected avalanche. However, they have not established a direct connection between seismic activity and the flooding.

For now, the avalanche remains a suspected trigger rather than a confirmed cause.

Himalayas Face Growing Natural Hazards

The disaster has also highlighted wider concerns about the changing Himalayan environment.

Melting glaciers, unstable mountain slopes, expanding glacial lakes and changing ice conditions are increasing the potential for sudden floods and other cryosphere-related hazards.

Experts say these events can be particularly dangerous because they may begin in remote, high-altitude locations with little warning. By the time the resulting surge reaches populated areas, communities may have only minutes to respond.

ICIMOD officials have warned that the increasing frequency and complexity of such hazards is putting existing monitoring and early-warning systems under growing pressure.

Scientists Continue the Investigation

The investigation into the Rasuwa disaster is continuing. Researchers are combining satellite observations with river-level measurements, seismic records and eyewitness and video evidence to reconstruct exactly what happened in the mountains.

The findings could help authorities understand the risks facing communities along the Bhote Kosi and Trishuli river systems and determine whether additional protective measures are necessary.

For residents affected by the disaster, however, the immediate concern remains safety. The possibility of another upstream blockage means authorities must continue monitoring the rivers and mountain slopes closely.

The Nepal flood demonstrates how quickly a mountain event can transform into a major downstream disaster. A collapse or avalanche occurring high in an isolated Himalayan valley can release enormous amounts of water and debris, sending destructive floods through communities hundreds of kilometres away in a matter of hours.

As scientists continue examining the evidence, determining whether an ice-rock avalanche caused the disaster—and whether another surge remains possible—will be crucial for protecting vulnerable communities in the region.
