Prime Minister Narendra Modi used his Independence Day address from the Red Fort on Saturday to deliver a wide-ranging message centred on India’s youth, economic ambitions, reforms and emerging national challenges. With last month’s student protests over exam paper leaks still fresh, the Prime Minister placed Gen Z and Yuva Shakti at the heart of his vision for a developed India by 2047.
The address marked Modi’s 13th consecutive Independence Day speech, making him only the second Prime Minister after Jawaharlal Nehru to reach the milestone. His nearly 75-minute speech combined policy announcements with a strong political message, including a call for 33% reservation for women and a warning about what he described as a new threat of “dimaagi naxal”.
Gen Z Takes Centre Stage
One of the biggest themes of the speech was the government’s renewed outreach to young Indians. Modi announced plans to train one crore youth in artificial intelligence skills, while also promising free online coaching for competitive examinations.
The free coaching initiative, according to the Prime Minister, is intended to reduce the financial pressure faced by poor and middle-class families preparing for competitive exams.
“Youth will lead us towards a Viksit Bharat,” Modi said from the Red Fort.
The focus on Gen Z comes shortly after large student-led protests over examination irregularities, paper leaks and unemployment. The protests eventually contributed to the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
With more than half of India’s population below the age of 35, young voters are also expected to play a major role in the country’s political landscape ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

Seven-Point Saptdhara Roadmap
Modi also unveiled a seven-point ‘Saptdhara’ roadmap as a framework for achieving the goal of Viksit Bharat. Drawing a parallel with the ancient reference to the “Sapta Sindhu”, or seven rivers, the Prime Minister presented the framework as a broad development strategy.
The first elements highlighted included strengthening India’s manufacturing capabilities and expanding agriculture and food exports.
Under the manufacturing vision, Modi called for India to become a trusted global manufacturing hub covering everything from components to finished products.
On agriculture, he emphasised the potential of Indian products such as millets, spices and fruits to reach international markets, while calling for India to become a global food powerhouse.
Women’s Reservation Gets Push
Women’s political representation was another major focus of the address. Amid the continuing political deadlock over the women’s quota issue, Modi urged opposition parties to put aside their differences and work towards implementing 33% reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies.
The appeal comes as the government continues to link women’s reservation with broader electoral and delimitation-related reforms.
Atmanirbhar Bharat Push
Modi also reiterated his focus on Atmanirbhar Bharat, highlighting areas he considers strategically important for India’s future economic and national security.
Semiconductors, critical minerals and energy security were among the sectors emphasised in the speech. The message was aimed at strengthening domestic capabilities while positioning India as a competitive global manufacturing and technology hub.
Warning Over ‘Dimaagi Naxal’
Alongside his development agenda, the Prime Minister warned of what he termed “dimaagi naxal”, adding a security and ideological dimension to his Independence Day message.
Overall, Modi’s speech attempted to combine youth-focused initiatives with a longer-term reform agenda. From AI training and free coaching to manufacturing, agriculture, women’s representation and self-reliance, the Prime Minister presented these priorities as key building blocks for his vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047.
