Sonam Wangchuk Sets 3 Conditions to End Hunger Strike

Climate activist and education reform campaigner Sonam Wangchuk has announced that he is prepared to end his prolonged hunger strike, but only if one of three specific conditions is fulfilled. The announcement came on Monday, coinciding with the beginning of Parliament’s Monsoon Session and the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) planned “Chalo Sansad” march in New Delhi.

The activist, who has been on an indefinite fast demanding accountability over alleged examination paper leaks, shared the conditions through a handwritten note posted on his official X account from his hospital bed. Wangchuk has been admitted to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital after police shifted him from the protest site during the later stages of his hunger strike.

His latest message signals a possible end to the fast but makes it clear that he expects concrete political action rather than symbolic assurances.

Sonam Wangchuk Lists Three Conditions to End Hunger Strike

In the note addressed to his supporters, Wangchuk said he would immediately end his hunger strike if the Central Government accepts responsibility for the alleged failures in India’s education system, particularly repeated examination paper leaks, including the NEET controversy.

If that does not happen, he said he wants to be allowed to reach Parliament along with senior leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party so they can directly present their concerns to Members of Parliament and political leaders across party lines.

As a third alternative, Wangchuk stated that if his health or official restrictions prevent him from reaching Parliament, then Members of Parliament and leaders from different political parties should visit him at Safdarjung Hospital and publicly assure him that the issue would be raised inside Parliament.

According to Wangchuk, fulfilling any one of these three conditions would be sufficient for him to end his fast.

Hospital Bed Message Highlights Protest Demands

The activist described his stay at Safdarjung Hospital as an “illegal detention” and claimed that his freedom of movement, communication and speech had been restricted.

Signing the note from his hospital bed, Wangchuk reiterated that his primary objective remains securing accountability over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations. His protest has consistently demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over repeated examination paper leaks and alleged failures in the education system.

Despite his deteriorating health over the past several weeks, Wangchuk maintained that his protest would only conclude if meaningful political assurances were received.

Delhi Police Tighten Security Ahead of Parliament March

The announcement came as Delhi witnessed heightened security arrangements ahead of both the Monsoon Session of Parliament and the CJP’s proposed Parliament march.

Delhi Police deployed heavy security personnel across central Delhi, particularly around Parliament, Jantar Mantar and other sensitive locations. Authorities also imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) across the New Delhi district.

In an official advisory, the Delhi Police clarified that no permission had been granted for the proposed protest march or procession. Officials urged citizens to avoid participating in any unauthorised gatherings to maintain law and order.

The restrictions come amid growing political attention surrounding Wangchuk’s protest and increasing public participation in the movement.

Supporters Continue to Back Sonam Wangchuk’s Campaign

Before being shifted to hospital, Wangchuk had appealed to supporters to ensure that the planned Parliament march remained peaceful while keeping pressure on policymakers.

His wife, Gitanjali Angmo, also conveyed messages from the activist encouraging supporters to continue the campaign for education reforms.

The hunger strike has attracted support from students, parents, education activists, lawyers and several political leaders, many of whom have urged the government to engage in dialogue instead of allowing the situation to escalate further.

With Parliament now in session, Wangchuk’s three conditions have placed renewed focus on the government’s response to allegations surrounding examination paper leaks. Whether the Centre chooses dialogue, parliamentary discussion or continued silence could determine not only the future of Wangchuk’s fast but also the direction of the wider education reform movement.
