India Successfully Test-Fires Agni-P Missile from Rail-Based Mobile Launcher

New Delhi: In a major boost to India’s defence preparedness, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on Wednesday successfully test-fired its new-generation nuclear-capable ballistic missile, Agni-P, from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha. This marks the first-ever launch of the missile from a rail-based mobile launcher, a development hailed as a milestone in India’s strategic capabilities.

Congratulating DRDO scientists, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the achievement highlights India’s growing technological strength in missile systems. “The first-of-its-kind launch carried out from a specially designed rail-based mobile launcher has the capability to move across the rail network without pre-conditions, enabling cross-country mobility and launch within a short reaction time with reduced visibility,” Singh posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Key Features of Agni-P

The Agni-P (Prime) is an advanced medium-range ballistic missile equipped with cutting-edge technologies:

  • Nuclear-capable design with improved range and accuracy.

  • Canisterised system, which allows for easier transportation, storage, and faster launch preparation.

  • Dual guidance systems — ring laser gyro-based Inertial Navigation System (INS) and micro Inertial Navigation System (MINS), with optional GPS and NaVIC satellite navigation support.

  • High accuracy, demonstrated in multiple past trials, making it a dependable deterrent against adversaries.

The missile has been designed to ensure flexibility of deployment. Its canisterised nature reduces operational complexity, while the rail-based launcher adds a layer of stealth and mobility, making it harder for adversaries to track.

Strategic Significance

The successful rail-based test is not just a technological achievement but also a signal of India’s evolving deterrence posture. By proving the missile’s compatibility with mobile launch platforms, India has shown its ability to deploy missiles quickly and discreetly across different regions of the country.

According to defence analysts, the system significantly enhances operational readiness by reducing launch preparation time and improving survivability in case of conflict.

What Lies Ahead

The DRDO is expected to carry out additional validation tests before the Agni-P is inducted into the Indian Armed Forces. Once operational, the missile is likely to strengthen India’s medium-range strike capability, complementing the existing Agni series of ballistic missiles.

For now, the latest test marks a new chapter in India’s missile development programme, reaffirming the country’s commitment to advancing indigenous defence technology and bolstering national security.
