Apple’s first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, is facing early concerns over its inner display, with some buyers reporting cracks and bright lines appearing on the screen within hours of using the device. A teardown by repair website iFixit has now identified potential design-related stress points around the phone’s hinge that could help explain the reported failures.
The iPhone Duo went on sale last week after years of speculation about Apple’s entry into the foldable smartphone market. However, reports of display damage have raised questions about its durability. iFixit’s findings offer possible explanations, although the teardown does not establish a definitive cause, and the reported incidents appear to involve only a small number of users.
What Could Be Causing iPhone Duo Display Failures?
According to iFixit, some users have reported hearing a crunching or popping sound while folding or unfolding their iPhone Duo, followed by cracks or bright lines appearing across the inner display.
To investigate the issue, the teardown team created a 3D model of the phone’s hinge using teardown footage, patents and CT scans. It compared the model with reported locations of display damage and found that the failures appeared to cluster around the transition between the opening for the connecting flex cable and the central hinge support.
One possible explanation is that the central support bar may not retract sufficiently when the phone closes. If that happens, the curved section of the folding display could press against the bar, creating a concentrated area of mechanical stress.
Another possibility involves the curved rails that guide the hinge mechanism. These rails rise above nearby flat components during folding and could interfere with the display if they do not move as intended.
Several structural edges also meet near the affected area, potentially concentrating pressure on the screen’s thin layers. A local fault in the display’s electrical connections could also cause an entire row or column of pixels to malfunction, even without an obvious break in the screen.
However, these remain possible explanations based on the teardown analysis, rather than confirmed causes of the reported failures.

Apple Reportedly Offers Free Replacement Units
Apple is reportedly offering free replacement units to iPhone Duo owners experiencing display problems. However, repairs outside the warranty period could prove expensive.
According to the report, an out-of-warranty inner-display repair would cost Rs 1,49,900. This is a substantial amount for a device whose starting price in India is already Rs 2,99,900 for the 256GB variant.
The price rises to Rs 4,49,900 for the 2TB model. Buyers may also face waiting periods because of reported supply constraints, while some retailers have reportedly demanded premiums of up to Rs 1 lakh over the official price.
iPhone Duo Performs Better in Dust Tests
Despite the reported hinge concerns, iFixit’s teardown found that the device performed relatively well in other areas.
During a fluorescent dust test, comparatively few particles entered the phone’s internal components. Some dust did reach the hinge and caused crunching sounds, but the iPhone Duo collected less visible dust than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold in similar tests.
The device also carries an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance.
The teardown further found that removing the nano-texture cover on the inner display was relatively straightforward. The phone continued to function after the layer was removed, although the display crease became more noticeable.
iPhone Duo Gets a 5/10 Repairability Score
iFixit awarded the iPhone Duo a provisional repairability score of 5 out of 10, describing it as the most repairable foldable smartphone the team had examined so far.
However, the website cautioned that repairing the device would still be difficult, highlighting the challenges involved in designing and maintaining foldable smartphones.
For now, the teardown offers clues rather than a definitive diagnosis of the reported display failures. While the iPhone Duo shows promise in dust resistance and repairability, its hinge design and inner-screen durability remain areas to watch as more users begin using Apple’s first foldable.
