AI Can Make One Person Do the Work of 10: Sridhar Vembu Explains

Artificial intelligence is reshaping the modern workplace, and Zoho CEO Sridhar Vembu believes that employees who know how to manage the technology will gain a significant advantage. In a discussion on X, formerly Twitter, Vembu highlighted the growing productivity gap between workers who effectively use AI and those who continue to rely on traditional working methods.

Vembu warned that computer-based jobs face a new reality, arguing that “one smart person using AI can perform the work of 10 people.” His remarks have drawn attention to how AI is changing workplace productivity and the skills employees may need to remain competitive.

According to Vembu, simply having access to AI tools is not enough. Workers must develop what he calls “meta-level skills” to guide the technology, solve problems and ensure that its output meets their objectives.

AI Is Creating a New Class of Highly Productive Workers

The discussion gained momentum after Sindhu Hariharan responded to Vembu’s initial post, highlighting a noticeable change in workplace behaviour.

Hariharan observed that employees who successfully incorporate AI into their daily tasks often end up taking on more work. Because they can complete assignments faster and increase their output, they may receive additional responsibilities.

Meanwhile, employees who do not use AI tools for productivity may continue working at their usual pace.

She described this as a significant shift that corporate teams will need to adapt to as AI becomes more integrated into everyday professional activities.

The observation points to a potential workplace divide: some employees are using AI to complete tasks more efficiently, while others have yet to incorporate these tools into their routines.

However, greater productivity can also mean heavier workloads for employees who use AI effectively, rather than simply allowing them to finish their work sooner.

What Are the Meta-Level Skills Needed to Use AI?

Responding to Hariharan, Vembu explained that AI does not automatically make every user more productive. Instead, the results depend on the person’s ability to direct the technology and evaluate its work.

He identified three important abilities that help people get better results from AI.

1. Clearly defining goals

Workers must understand what they want to achieve before asking AI to complete a task. Clear instructions depend on having a well-defined objective and communicating it effectively to the system.

2. Breaking complex problems into smaller tasks

Vembu emphasised the importance of dividing complicated problems into manageable parts before giving them to AI. This approach helps users structure their requests and guide the technology through a task more effectively.

3. Monitoring and correcting AI output

Human oversight remains essential. Users must recognise when AI produces an incorrect or irrelevant response and intervene to bring the work back on track.

These abilities allow workers to do more than simply generate content or automate routine tasks. They help people direct the overall process and ensure that the results serve the intended purpose.

Why Sridhar Vembu Compares AI Skills to System Architecture

Vembu compared these meta-level abilities to the expertise traditionally associated with system architects. Such professionals need to understand how different components fit together, divide complex systems into manageable parts and ensure that everything works as intended.

In a similar way, effective AI users must understand the broader problem, determine which tasks the technology can handle and oversee the final output.

Vembu said AI substantially boosts the productivity of people who possess these skills, adding that the trend is already visible in workplaces.

His argument suggests that the advantage may not necessarily belong to people who use the most AI tools, but to those who understand how to apply them effectively.

Is AI Management Becoming an Essential Workplace Skill?

As AI tools become more capable, employees may increasingly need a combination of technical familiarity, critical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making abilities.

Workers who can define objectives, structure complicated assignments and evaluate AI-generated results may be better positioned to use the technology productively.

At the same time, Vembu’s comments highlight the uncertainty facing computer-based roles as AI changes how work is performed. While the technology can increase output, its impact will depend on the tasks involved and how effectively people use it.

The broader message is that adapting to AI requires more than learning a few prompts. Understanding problems, communicating goals and exercising sound judgement remain essential.

As workplaces continue to evolve, these meta-level skills could become increasingly valuable for employees seeking to make the most of AI rather than simply compete with it.
