The company also says it’s more efficient, using fewer tokens on simpler tasks and sustaining focus on longer, more demanding ones. Even with its higher intellect, OpenAI assures that this version remains “warmer and more empathetic,” meaning you might still get a friendly “How’s your day going?” between lessons on quantum mechanics.
ChatGPT Gets a Personality Upgrade

Addressing GPT-5 Criticism
GPT-5.1 also marks a strategic correction. After GPT-5’s debut earlier this year, many users complained that it felt colder and less engaging than GPT-4o. OpenAI seems to have taken that feedback seriously, making “warmth and wit” a major design priority this time around.
The company claims GPT-5.1 represents “a more emotionally intelligent model,” capable of responding with better tone, empathy, and nuance — while retaining GPT-5’s logical precision and creative fluency.
Availability and Pricing
For now, GPT-5.1 will remain exclusive to paid users for the first three months. OpenAI plans to extend access to free-tier users afterward, once the system scales smoothly.
Meanwhile, the company has confirmed that GPT-5 Pro subscribers will be automatically upgraded to GPT-5.1 soon. OpenAI also clarified that the update “does not affect the availability of legacy models,” ensuring users can continue using previous versions if they prefer.
