India’s southwest monsoon intensified dramatically, unleashing torrential rain across several states and causing floods, landslides, waterlogging, transport disruptions and rescue operations on a massive scale. Delhi, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Kerala, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand were among the worst-hit regions as authorities remained on high alert. Thousands of people were evacuated from flood-prone areas while emergency teams worked around the clock to rescue stranded residents.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned that heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected to continue in many parts of the country over the coming days, prompting governments to strengthen disaster preparedness measures.
Delhi-NCR Faces Waterlogging And Traffic Paralysis
The national capital witnessed one of its heaviest spells of rain this monsoon season, leading to severe waterlogging across several neighbourhoods. The IMD issued red and orange alerts, warning residents about intense rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning.
According to weather officials, Mayur Vihar recorded over 100 mm of rainfall in the previous 24 hours, while Pusa, Lodhi Road and Safdarjung also received significant rainfall.
Heavy waterlogging affected several parts of Delhi, including Sadar Bazar, Greater Kailash, Badarpur, Nasirpur, Swarup Nagar and Kushak Road. Traffic crawled along Ring Road, Outer Ring Road and NH-48, especially near Dhaula Kuan, Mahipalpur and Rajokri, causing long delays for commuters.
In Rohini, three people lost their lives after a newly constructed four-storey building collapsed. Preliminary investigations suggested that structural alterations during plumbing work may have weakened the building. Officials have not linked the collapse directly to the heavy rainfall.
Neighbouring Gurugram also witnessed severe traffic congestion as roads remained submerged in several locations.
Surat Battles Floodwaters After Relentless Rain
Gujarat’s Surat remained one of the worst-affected cities as continuous heavy rainfall flooded residential areas and roads. Low-lying localities remained submerged, forcing authorities to evacuate thousands of residents to safer shelters.
Emergency teams distributed food packets and essential supplies to families stranded in waterlogged buildings. Officials reported that at least nine people had lost their lives in rain-related incidents across Gujarat over the past few days.
Floodwaters also disrupted normal life, with many roads becoming inaccessible and civic authorities continuing pumping operations to remove accumulated water.

Mumbai Rains Disrupt Rail And Rescue Operations
Maharashtra continued to battle the impact of heavy rainfall as Mumbai received another spell of intense showers accompanied by thunderstorms.
Local train services experienced delays, affecting thousands of commuters during peak office hours. Long-distance trains travelling towards Gujarat also faced disruptions because of waterlogging in the Vasai-Virar section and flooding in parts of south Gujarat.
Meanwhile, rescue teams continued operations in Pimpri Chinchwad after a massive garbage mound collapsed following heavy rain. Officials feared that several people remained trapped beneath the debris as search efforts continued.
Landslides in the Bhor Ghat section also disrupted rail connectivity between Mumbai and Pune.
Kerala And Jammu & Kashmir Hit By Landslides
Heavy rainfall triggered landslides and flash floods in several hilly regions.
In Kerala’s Wayanad district, rescue operations continued after a rain-soaked mound of excavated earth collapsed at a tunnel construction site, leaving five people missing. Rescue teams faced difficult conditions due to continuous rainfall.
In Jammu and Kashmir, flash floods affected parts of Doda district, prompting emergency response measures as authorities worked to protect vulnerable communities.
Heavy Rain Continues In Rajasthan And Uttarakhand
Rajasthan also remained under the influence of an active southwest monsoon. Ramganj Mandi in Kota district recorded the highest rainfall in the state, while several districts experienced moderate to heavy showers.
In Uttarakhand, persistent rainfall increased the risk of landslides in the hill districts, affecting road connectivity and prompting authorities to monitor vulnerable routes closely. Disaster response teams remained on standby as rainfall continued across several mountainous areas.
Centre Reviews Situation Across States
With the weather situation worsening, Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the flood situation with the Chief Ministers of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Kerala and Jammu and Kashmir.
He assured them of all possible assistance from the Central Government and instructed disaster management agencies to remain fully prepared for rescue and relief operations.
Authorities across multiple states have intensified monitoring, deployed National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams where required, and urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert.
More Heavy Rain Forecast
The IMD has forecast continued heavy rainfall across northern, western and southern India over the next few days. Officials have warned that additional rain may worsen flooding, trigger fresh landslides and further disrupt transport services.
As the southwest monsoon strengthens across the country, state governments continue rescue operations while closely monitoring weather developments to minimise loss of life and property.
